J.Crew doesn’t seem to be putting any hault on their 1400 collaboration with New Balance. Last year they introduced six new colors to the model. This doesn’t include their Classic Pine and Navy color-ways from 2010 which puts it at eight different C/W’s to choose from. In 2012 we get two more added to the ever growing catalog in the colors Cranberry and Blue Sky. Hues perfect for the coming Spring that give you that POP on your feet. Back in October 2011, Hikmet of Solebox released some on-foot images of this Saucony Shadow 5000 pack. It was right after Solebox’s “Three Brothers” launch. Many thought it was just images of those colored-up in photoshop. Well, guess they were wrong because here are one of two top view images of both color-ways. No info yet as to what is the deal with them, but if you live near Solebox the samples are there for your viewing pleasure. The new year is already being rev-uped by New Balance as they introduce a new custom shoe to their online palette. It’s non other than the durable and high-mileage trainer, the New Balance US993. The heritage silhouette, originally released in 1980, is a renowned model around the world. Still used today as a trainer, its no surprise that it makes it’s debut as a custom shoe…

On this introduction to the New Balance US993C, you’ll get to play with twenty four different colors (one new hue), four materials and panels galore. If you already played with the NB574C, than you know what to expect from the colors available (For those that don’t know, you can check out the list below). There is only one new color added by the name of Peacoat. It can only be applied to the throat stay and heel tab overlay. In the material department, you can make-up your custom NB993US from suede, 3M reflect and a new leather added in the form of nubuck. Exciting to see nubuck, but you are limited to only using it on the vamp accent, tongue tag, heel tab, and heel tab overlay. One other point is that the nubuck is only accessible with six colors and the N logo can only be applied with nine colors. Also, the actual N stays grey and is unchangeable no matter what color you choose to make the logo base. The 3M reflect is on two areas of the shoe, the heel tab overlay and the throat stay. They can be applied with either Black or Grey. The two last options you are given to change on the shoe, are the speed lace (front ankle plastic lace holes) in six different hues and the tongue overlay in sixteen hues. The midsole stays as the classic and generic colors of Grey and White.

The shoes are now ready to build at shopnewbalance.com. The cost is $174.95 with free shipping and takes anywhere from ONLY, 4 to 8 business days to arrive at your place of residency. Take your time if you decide to make one, its’s a difficult one to color block. I’ll be giving it a try, but it’ll be a while before I actually order one. Detroit’s Burn Rubber is at it again. In November 2010, they released their first project with New Balance on Rick William’s favorite NB model, the MT580; I did a Fresh Out The Box review here. That shoe did really well for them, even making it to Complex’s top 10 shoes for 2010. The obvious success of that, lead BR to do another shoe. Well, another two shoes in a pack dubbed the “Workforce”. Based off the “Blue Collar” and “White Collar” jobs of the world, the make-ups include gum bottoms and heavy black and grey uppers accented again with patent leather. Interested? Live in NYC? Than you are in luck…

The New Balance 574C is a lot better than maybe most would have thought. The materials, shape and color palette give you a lot of options to make-up your own 1 of 1. Get caught buying one and your guaranteed to buy another. As is the case with me. This is my fourth New Balance 574 and definitely not my last. In fact, I have another four in my stack that I will share at another time. For now, here is  my NB 574C “A.P.O.C.”…

The Idea:

I wanted to create a Black and tonal Grey color-way with a POP of color. This would be more of a beater for me, mostly worn when I do photo sessions. That’s why I wanted it to be mostly Black and Grey. Sort of hidden, but with a dash of color that would make it noticeable. Hence, A Pop Of Color A.P.O.C.

Color-Way:

This C/W is based  on two of my Nike iD’s in combination from the ideas that made them up. One is the AM1 “Mid-Night Rose” and the AM1 “Nike iD”. Both are dominated with black and accented with a POP of color. Originally, the Hot Pink accent was going to be Orange. I went back and forth for a few weeks and dragged it out that I actually ordered a different NB 574C. But, I dove in with the Hot Pink because I prefer that POP more. The kool thing about the way I color blocked this is the fact that you can substitute the Hot Pick with pretty much any color available and it will look good. Obviously, some brighter hues will look better, but you can get away with any color really. This was also the first time I used 3M reflective on the heel tap; Unfortunately it’s no longer available as an option on the current NB574C palette.

Overall:

The end result was satisfying to my eyes. It’s not my best design, far from it, but the simplicity of the C/W is what really does it for me. I don’t need the whole shoe to be more colorful than it is, nor do I need it to have more of the Hot Pink in there. It works for what it is and the idea, I think, was executed very well.
